the Da Vinci Code

Monday, May 29th, 2006

Went to catch the Da Vinci Code today at tm..was surprised to spot lh and his friend ahead of me in the queue. Actually I recognised him because of his bag, after seeing that for the whole of the Sydney trip. Anyway, I was with hq and yh today. Haha they brought quite some food for me..Hq baked some corn muffins, and her mum made some dumplings as well…nice!

The show was ok I think, though it got a bit draggy towards the end..I could follow the story because I have read the novel..but I still prefer Angels and Demons over that. :P Went for some shopping before going to their house for dinner. haha had a nice simple dinner. Came back home just in time to catch a bit of the Chan 8 drama starring Fann Wong. More importantly, it was to see some scenes shot at Sydney..yay I can recognise the different places! lol..

anyway, really wanna say thanks for the muffins, the dumplings and the dinner! yea!

Sending off of Jens Lehmann, a rare goal from Sol Campbell, 2 excellent finishes in 5 minutes were the main highlights of this year’s 51st European Cup Final. Being a neutral fan, I felt that this was to be one of the matches that I cannot miss, featuring 2 teams that perhaps play the most entertaining football at this moment in time. Arsenal started well, with 2 good chances falling to skipper Henry. On the stroke of 20 mins, Eto’o latched on to a through pass, only to be denied illegally by Lehmann in a 1 on 1 situation. To me, it was a clear sending off as Lehmann, being the last man, caught Eto’o late, but I am absolutely puzzled why the referee didn’t allow play to go on, when Guily invitingly put the ball into the empty net. My sympathy goes to Pires, who was sacrifised in the tactical change, and would perhaps play his last game for the Gunners.

Arsenal did well to take the lead through Sol Campbell’s header from a Henry free kick, though Eboue was clearly seen to fall upon minimal contact, which won the free kick in the first place. This lead was preserved till the 76th min, when Eto’o again pounced on to a clever pass from Larsson to beat the keeper at his near post. One must marvel at the tactical substitutions made by Frank Rijkaard, with Larsson the provider of the 2 goals, Iniesta dictating play, and Belletti the provider of the winning goal. I also want to give credit to Ljungberg, who was running tirelessly throughout the evening. Deep down I was really hoping for a dramatic equaliser, but I guessed it would require some magical effort in the form of Steven Gerrard’s long range drive in the recently concluded FA Cup Final.

Last year was the year we witnessed Liverpool doing the impossible. This year is the year when the best team won. It was a sweet moment when Henry was seen cuddling Guily’s son on camera afer the match. Perhaps he would have more opportunites to do so when he ends up at the Nou Camp at the start of next season? LOL.

Sciencecentre_4 hmm, went out with xy to the Science Centre today. Basically, it was supposed to be a 8-min walk from the Jurong East Interchange. However, we took the red route, which took much longer than 8 min definitely! -.-” And we only realised this blunder when we tried to walk back to the interchange at the end of the day. This time we took the black route and yah, 8 mins…

CRAP…actually I was supposed to join my platoon mates and PC for dinner, and I wondered how I came to agree to go in the first place when my tuition starts at the same time as the dinner..forgetful zhiqin..

ya and her mid-year block test is before the holidays, which means because of my sydney trip, today was my last lesson with her before her paper. AND I can do nothing but hope for the best..because I can tell that she is still not confident enough…haiz..jiayou ba!

freak weather

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

The weather’s really freaky! This afternoon was one of the hottest afternoons I have ever experienced. zzz. Went to town today. Oh and I saw this guy from Weapons Platoon and he approached me to help him do a survey. Tried the chrysanthemum tea that he offered..it tastes not bad lar I have to say..Anyway met up with xy later. We watched this show called "Take The Lead". It has an interesting theme, regarding dancing and detention school kids, albeit with a corny ending. Nevertheless it was still a decent show, which was a relief as we kinda have a habit of watching silly shows.zzz. At the same time, kev and the rest booked the tour to sydney le. Thanks! and sorry for not being able to join you all! Talking about the weather again, by evening time, it had to rain..And I realised that it tends to rain heavily on Tues evenings, and I dun like going for tuition on rainy days. In the end we have to make do with the small umbrella that I have and yes once again, I go for tuition with a wet umbrella.

Anyway nice catching up with her today..looking forward to the holiday trip!

The Hare and the Tortoise (Part 1)

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Came across this as I was going through all my stuff..It was actually given by Mr Chan during JC days..just wanna share this..

Once upon a time a tortosie and a hare had an argument about who was faster. They decided to settle the argument with a race. They agreed on a route and started off the race.

The hare shot ahead and ran briskly for some time. Then seeing that he was far ahead of the tortoise, he thought he’d sit under a tree for some time and relax before continuing the race.

He sat under the tree and soon fell asleep. The tortoise plodding on overtook him and soon finished the race, emerging as the undisputed champ.

The hare work up and realised that he’d lost the race. The moral of the story is that slow and steady wins the race.

Thsi is the version of the story that we’ve grown up with.

But then recently, someone told me a more interesting version of this story. It continues.

The hare was disappointed at losing the race and he did some Defect Prevention (Root Cause Analysis). He realised that he’d lost the race only because he had been overconfident, careless and lax. If he had not taken things for granted, there’s no way the tortoise could have beaten him. So he challenged the tortoise to another race. The tortoise agreed.

This time, the hare went all out and ran without stopping from start to finish. He won by several miles.

The moral of the story? Fast and consistent will always beat the slow and steady. If you have two people in your organisation, one slow, methodical and reliable, and the other fast and still reliable at what he does, the fast and reliable chap will consistently climb the organisational ladder faster than the slow, methodical chap.

It’s good to be slow and steady; but it’s better to be fast and reliable.

To be continued…
